20 for 20 Friends of ANCHOR Auction
Earlier this year to mark its 20th anniversary, Friends of ANCHOR launched the ‘Dream Big’ campaign – its biggest fundraising appeal ever by pledging £1M to the University of Aberdeen’s ambitious £4.5M project to attract and recruit a world-class oncology research team to the North-east of Scotland. This will have a lasting impact on the care, treatment and wellbeing provided to local cancer and haematology patients.
The 20 for 20 voyage is a milestone anniversary project which will contribute to this appeal and has provided a platform for the public as well as artists, sponsors and partners to raise awareness of the charity and get involved in a creative and exciting way.
20 anchors were individually designed and decorated by very talented local artists and displayed throughout the North-east of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland from 1st July through to the end of October.
During the evening of Thursday, 23rd November, at the Chester Hotel, Aberdeen, 14 of the anchors were auctioned. In total, the ‘20 for 20 Appeal’ raised in the region of £350K which has allowed Friends of ANCHOR to reach its £M target. This is a truly fantastic achievement in such a short time.
Having supported the launch of the campaign Grampian Police Scotland Pipe Band were invited to provide Pipers to welcome attendees to the Auction and a Mini Band to play during the interval.
Leading Drummer Mike Haggart said, “It is always a real delight to support local good causes and what could be better than ‘Friends of ANCHOR’? When we learned of the invitation to play at the ‘20 for 20 Auction’, every Band Member that was available wanted to be part of the occasion. We are all delighted the ‘20 for 20 Campaign’ has been such an outstanding success and the Band considers itself privileged to have been a small part of the memorable Auction event”.
