Police Pipe Band Secures the Services of a New Drum Major
Since early 2015, under the enthusiastic stewardship of Pipe Major Pamela Whyte and Leading Drummer Nicky Gibson, the Grampian Police Scotland Pipe Band has been significantly remoulded. Within the fold there are now in the region of 30 competing musicians, all of whom are eagerly looking forward to the forthcoming Competition Season.
The Band is once again of a scale that it is in great demand to perform at high profile public engagements and ceremonies. These include the likes of; Aberdeen City Armistice Day Parade, Scottish Police College Passing Out Parades, Aberdeen City Kirkin o’ the Council.
For such occasions, it is essential the appearance and deportment of the Band is of the highest possible order. With this in mind, the services of a fine and experienced Drum Major was sought…………enter ROLAND STUART who has agreed to become the Band’s new Drum Major. Roland, who hails from Glenkindie, became involved in the Pipe Band scene at 12 years of age as a Side Drummer with the Lonnach Pipe Band. A few years later he picked up a Mace for the first time and has been developing his skills as a Drum Major ever since. During his novice years Roland was tutored by now veteran Drum Major Bill Barclay.
Roland has previously plied his Drum Majoring skills with Towie and Portlethen Pipe Bands. To date the pinnacle of Roland’s Drum Majoring journey came some 9 years ago when he was invited to take on the unique and onerous challenges of Lead Drum Major at the Braemar Gathering. During the annual Gathering, Roland has the responsibility of harnessing as many as 12 Pipe Bands to provide the world famous Braemar Gathering Massed Pipes and Drums Welcome and Farewell for HM Queen and other Royal Family Members in attendance. Roland’s appointment with the Grampian Police Scotland Band will not curtail his Braemar Gathering Lead Drum Major duties.

Roland’s stature as a Drum Major makes his arrival a significant addition to the Band. His presence will add hugely to the Band’s appearance when performing at prestigious events”.
